This project is addressing the current and ongoing issue of food wastage in Australia. easygreen, is a communal garden franchise for the general public to get involved in and grow their own produce at a more valuable cost over supermarket prices and quality. easygreen also runs a second franchise within the business, a cafe named easygreen that’s resources are completely provided by the garden. By doing this we aim to reduce carbon emissions produced by food wastage every year (Oz Harvest, 2018) and transition communities on a small scale through an agricultural process to help assist the coming future involving climate change. Our communal gardens and on site cafes will be in numerous convenient locations across Brisbane and easily accessible for people of all needs.
In order to make all of this plausible, we must anticipate change. Planning back from the future will provide deep consideration and thought processes to be applied to understand the problem and generate a solution. We predict that our desperate need for change will impact the cycle and transition ourselves towards a better future in waste management. If we can better understand how the cycle works now, compared to how we think it should work, we can build an efficient solution for a more sustainable future. Our initial goal is to stop the damage caused by food wastage contributing to deforestation and land damage, followed by emissions and gases being released into the ozone.
Reflecting on the past, Indigenous communities had built sophisticated agricultural processes and would live off the land pre-colonisation (Gilles, 2020). This process is presently known as “traditional” land management (Hill, 2013). These traditional processes were phased out almost completely after the industrial revolution and introduced exportation of goods in exchange for economic boosts, leading to the development of mass production. The after effect of mass production created a large surge in food wastage and deforestation due to the emissions food wastage would produce (Station, 2018). Our design process of beginning a communal garden must aim to relay traditional farming and crop growth to prevent any further damages being created by the impact of food wastage.
Here we have a few of our rough sketches of our initial concept, showing our vision of what the garden may look like.

Our customers will benefit from our garden by noticing a huge saving in their weekly grocery shop when they transition to high quality grown produce farmed by themselves in their very own community. We recognise that supermarkets will always be the most convenient way for customers to buy their “fresh” produce every week, that’s why we want to offer an unbeatable deal to our members that they can’t refuse, leading to a decline in our current agricultural practises. Our memberships outline the numerous benefits that come with each stage, being the more expensive the more benefits to the consumer.
